The grizzly is one of the world's largest land-based carnivores. The grizzly can run downhill and uphill at a speed of over 35 mph. The grizzly is omnivorous mammal. Most of it's diet consists of berries, roots, bulbs of plants, ground dwelling rodents, moths and nuts. The grizzly, will also prey on large animals, such as moose, caribou, bison, elk, mountain goats and mountain sheep. The grizzly is mainly solitary animal, except during mating season. Due to hunting and the huge growth of human population, the grizzly has been driven into remote northern habitats. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lists the grizzly as an endangered species, except in Alaska. Presently, there are only 1,100 grizzlies left in the lower 48.

In animal lore, the bear is a creature of dreams and visions. The bear teaches the healing arts, introspection, caution, bravery, wisdom, fairness, curiosity and leadership.
